Mercury-containing tilt switches have been used in heating thermostats for more than 40 years. They provide accurate and reliable temperature control, require little or no maintenance, and do not require a power source. However, each switch contains approximately 3 grams of mercury.

Mercury-free thermostats are available. Electronic thermostats, for example, provide many of the same features as mercury thermostats. Both types can be programmed to lower room temperatures at pre-set times. This results in fuel cost savings and the environmental benefits from burning less fuel.

Many homes are updating to the newer electronic programmable thermostats. When your old heating thermostat is replaced, ask the installing contractor to take it and dispose of it properly. The large thermostat manufacturers have set up a thermostat recycling program with the heating and cooling contractors.

If you replace your own thermostat, it still should be recycled properly at the Brown County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. DO NOT dispose of it in the trash.
