Ambient Water Quality Monitoring of the Lower Fox River and Green Bay

Collecting water samples on the Bay for laboratory analysis.

Location of Monitoring Sites.

The Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District (GBMSD) has operated an Ambient Water Quality Monitoring of the Lower Fox River and Green Bay since 1986. This voluntary activity is conducted as part of GBMSD's commitment toward protecting our aquatic environment.

GBMSD operates this program to obtain water quality information about the effects of its discharge upon its receiving waters along with related permit implications. The program also provides other agencies and institutions with water quality information to enhance the factual and scientific basis for the management of our aquatic resources.

Program activities include:

  • Operating continuous monitoring stations
  • Collecting and analyzing water sediment samples.
  • Managing the long-term database and making it available to others.
  • Communicating results in reports, technology transfers and informational brochures.

The geographical area of coverage of the program approximates GBMSD's service area. This includes the lower 7 miles of the Fox River, from upstream of the De Pere Dame ot he River mouth, and extending 14 miles into Green Bay. This area includes the Fox River/Southern Green Bay Area of Concern as identified by the International Joint Commission, which is addressed by the Green Bay/Fox River Remedial Action Plan.
