A collaborative program of the Brown County Health Department and the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District
Monitoring of Brown County Recreational Waters Since 1993 the Brown County Health Department and Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District have conducted collaborative monitoring of some waters of Brown County that are popularly used for water recreation. Monitoring is conducted to assess the suitability of these waters for forms of recreation including swimming, wading, water skiing, and boating.
Monitoring locations are sampled weekly during June, July and August, and less frequently in May and September. Some water quality measurements are made at each location and samples are collected for laboratory analysis.
General Results
- Fox River & Green Bay locations have commonly met the swimming standard for fecal coliform bacteria.
- All these monitoring locations have normally failed to meet the swimming standard for water clarity.
Laboratory analysis of the samples is conducted by the Brown County Health Department. Samples are analyzed for several types of bacteria, which indicate if the water could cause illness to recreational users.
Results are compared to Wisconsin's water quality standards to determine the suitability of the sites monitored for various forms of recreation.
