Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs)

CFLs contain very small amounts of mercury and are sealed within a glass tube. Mercury from a CFL is only release if it is broken. So what happens if I break one? The EPA recommends:

1. Before cleanup, air out room for at least 15 minutes and shut off heating and cooling systems.
2. Carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid or in a sealed plastic bag.
3. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
4. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.
5. Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb.
6. Bring your sealed bag or jar to your local household hazardous waste facility for proper disposal.

In Brown County, residents can bring them to the Brown County HHWF on Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
