Why use fluorescent or HID lamps?

Fluorescent and HID lighting are excellent business and environmental choices because they can use up to 50% less electricity than incandescent lighting. However, used fluorescent and HID lamps must be managed properly because they contain mercury. One hundred (100) 4-foot fluorescent tubes contain approximately 4 grams of mercury.

How do I dispose of lamps?

• Store lamps in an area and in a way that will prevent them from breaking, such as in the boxes the lamps came in.
• Do not break or crush lamps because mercury may be released.
• If lamps are accidentally broken, store them in a sealed container. Pick up spilled powder and add it to the sealed container.
• DO NOT dispose of them in the trash. Take household lamps to the Brown County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHWF), located at 2561 S. Broadway. If you need further information, call the Recycling Hotline (920)448-4400.
